Poople strategy: how to reach POOP in the fewest guesses

Most Poople ladders can be solved in five or six guesses, and the best players hit the shortest path most days. It isn't luck. Here is what they do.

1. Know the gateway words

Only a dozen or so words are one step from POOP: BOOP, COOP, GOOP, HOOP, LOOP, PLOP, PROP, POMP, POOF, POOH, POOL, POOR. Every ladder must pass through one of them. When you look at your starting word, ask which gateway is closest.

2. Get the double O early

The middle of POOP is OO. Words with an O in second or third position (LOOK, BOOT, HOOD, COOL, ROOM) are usually one or two steps from a gateway. If your start word has an O, keep it. If it doesn't, your first move is often to put one in.

3. Keep flexible letters until the end

Letters like S, T, L, R, N and the vowels give a word many neighbours. A word like LOST can go to LAST, LIST, LOSE, COST, POST, LOFT and more. Changing a rare letter (J, Q, X, Z) is usually the right first move because it unlocks the word.

4. Don't fix what's already right

The game highlights letters that already match POOP in position. If the first letter is already P, leave it alone unless there is truly no other way.

5. Study the shortest path afterwards
